Alan Gow

Panel Co-Chair

Paraplanner of Argonaut Paraplanning

I’m one of the directors at Argonaut Paraplanning, a multi-award winning outsourced firm which I set up in 2011. I’ve been on the panel for about 10 years and it’s helped force me to challenge myself, getting involved in things I never thought I’d do, like presenting online and speaking on stage. I’m the current Chair of the panel and have overseen projects such as producing our Suitability Report Writing Guide. I help find interesting speakers and informative topics for our Paraplanner Lab webinar series and the Purely Paraplanning Conference. My passion is bringing Suitability Reports out of the dark ages, focusing on consumer duty and client understanding.

Panel Co-Chair

Founder and Managing Director of Core Financial Paraplanning Limited

I have been an outsourced Paraplanner for over 14 years’ experience, founding Core Financial Paraplanning Limited in 2011.

I was honoured to be named Director of the Year at the 2023 Yorkshire Financial Awards and Team Leader of the Year at the 2024 Professional Paraplanner Awards—recognition that means a great deal to me and my team.

I joined the PFS Paraplanning Panel in 2023 as I felt that I had so much to say on the subject.  I have always felt that empowering new paraplanners was of the upmost importance, especially in the outsourced space, and as such, I have been involved in creating the PFS Guide to Paraplanning.

For me, an important part of being on the panel is that I get to work with people who push me (in the best way) but also motivate me to be a better Paraplanner.  It has also allowed me to be involved in some great initiatives such as the Purely Paraplanning conferences

Phil Greenwood

Phil Greenwood

Head Of Technical Consulting at EQ

I’m Phil, I’m a Fellow of the PFS and have been paraplanning in various guises for over 10 years, the last 7 have been heading up paraplanning departments and getting quite heavily involved in how the company operates on a wider basis; from process, to training, to technology and most things in between. Through this I’ve seen first-hand how pivotal paraplanners have become. I am focussed on helping to define the scope of the role and providing guidance to the paraplanning community on best practice. I am passionate about paraplanning as a profession and would love to help provide the next generation of paraplanners a solid foundation to build their careers on.

Sophie Brown

Sophie Brown

Head of Paraplanning at Ward Goodman

I entered the financial services industry in 2018 after completing a placement year as part of my university degree and was offered a Trainee Paraplanner position. I have since completed my diploma as well as other exams including Trusts, Long Term Care Planning and Equity Release and am currently working through the AF exams on the road to chartered.

I am passionate about getting younger people into the industry and am excited to be on the paraplanning panel to highlight further what a fantastic career route paraplanning and financial services is.

James Mullarkey

James Mullarkey

Senior Paraplanner

Handelsbanken Wealth & Asset Management

I’m a Senior Paraplanner with 10 years’ experience across both small and large firms, independent and restricted. Over the years I’ve seen first-hand how instrumental Paraplanners are to delivering high-quality advice.

Alongside my core Paraplanning role, I’ve been heavily involved in improving processes, developing templates, strengthening quality standards and exploring better use of MI and automation to improve efficiency without compromising on quality. I’ve experienced many of the common challenges Paraplanners face including throughput pressure, adviser dynamics and maintaining standards which has given me a strong interest in raising awareness of the true scope and value of the role.

I’m passionate about developing Paraplanning as a profession. I’m particularly keen to help champion Paraplanners’ voices, support best practice, and contribute to initiatives that build the Paraplanning community. I look forward to sharing practical insights and help guide Junior Paraplanners get a good start in the job that has given so much to me.

Sam Harvey

Sam Harvey

Senior Paraplanner

Christie Financial Planning

I first started in financial services in 2012, working for an insurer, before changing the path to pensions and then into IFA firms in 2019. I have been a paraplanner since 2021, and since then I have also worked as a financial planner, however I have found my home in paraplanning! I currently hold PFE(PIP), DipPFS, CertPFS (Securities) and Cert CII (FS) along with Long Term Care Planning and I am well on my way to becoming a Chartered Financial Planner.

I am so passionate about my job, and training and mentoring others to be the best they can in their role. I firmly believe that paraplanning is such an exciting and ever-changing career to be in and not just treated as a stepping-stone to advice.

I’m a huge advocate of looking after your mental health and I’m a qualified mental health first aider. I also believe in supporting neurodiversity and disability accessibility in the workplace, being both neurodiverse and having a physical disability myself. I live in central Scotland and I am an avid reader, as well as a huge Formula 1 fan!
