Borrow a book

Who can borrow?

Any member of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) or The Personal Finance Society (PFS) can borrow from the library. Items are issued on loan on the understanding they are for the use of the registered borrower and will not be lent to others. We can post items anywhere in Europe.

What can be borrowed?

Ten books can be taken out per member. If a library item cannot be borrowed there will be a note stating the item is 'For Reference'.

For how long?

The loan period is four weeks.

Items on loan must be returned, or the loan renewed, on or before the due date.

Whilst a reminder email service is in place, it remains the responsibility of members to monitor the due date of their items, to ensure their timely renewal and return.

Provided the item has not been reserved by another reader, a loan may be renewed online on receiving the reminder email, by telephone, email or at the library itself as many times as you like.

How can I borrow?

Once you have identified the books you would like to borrow, you can contact Knowledge Services on 0207 417 4406 or email

If the items are available, we will place a hold on the books for you to collect in person, or place a reservation on them so they are returned as soon as possible.

Alternatively we can arrange a postal loan. Please see below details of postal loans.

Postal loan

Postal loans are free of charge, however, you will be responsible to cover any postage fees for returning the books, should you decide to post them back.

To request a postal loan please contact us with your requirements. If you're requesting several books, it's best to email, but please do call if you prefer.

Returning books by post

Please return the books to:

Knowledge Services
Chartered Insurance Institute
20 Aldermanbury
London EC2V 7HY

We advise members, when posting the books back, to do so by recorded delivery. This way, if the books get lost in the post, it is the post office's fault and not yours.

Are there any charges?

When collected in person there is no charge for collection of items on hold/reserve in the library.

There are no charges for posting the books out to you but the return postage fees should be covered by you. As a rough guide, please see the table below:

Royal Mail 2nd class Parcelforce Worldwide express 48
up to 1kg £2.50 up to 2kg £11.99
up to 2kg (medium size)  £4.40 up to 5kg £12.98
up to 5 kg £13.75 up to 10 kg  £16.40

Prices correct as at March 2016.

Do you apply fines for late returns?

We do not apply fines, however failing ot renew or return the books in time might result in the suspension of the lending service.

You are responsible for items on loan to you until they are returned to the library. In the event of loss you will be invoiced for the current price of the item (or the current price of a comparable item if out of print). However, you will not be held liable for any loss in the return post provided you have obtained a "proof of postage" certificate (free from post offices) and the parcel is properly wrapped.

If the item you want is not on the shelves but is in stock it can usually be reserved for you. We have multiple copies of many books, so the waiting period will often be quite short. If the item you want is not in the library stock, we will assess and buy if relevant to the collection.
